Town Crier Competition

Town Crier Competition 2017-06-12T19:59:05+00:00

Historically, Town Criers were the first line of communication in the days of yore and they now participate as representatives of Mayors and Councillors in their municipalities. They each attend more than 100 events in their towns and cities from park dedications to special events and more. The Town Crier brings an element of pomp and pageantry to each event by doing a cry to describe what is going to take place and proclaiming the opening of the event.

During the Markham Village Music Festival, we will be holding a Canadian Town Crier championship competition. The competition topics will include recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary. More than 20 Town Criers from across Canada will compete each day of the Festival. Trophies will be given to the winners.

We are fortunate to have an award-winning Town Crier, John Webster, here in Markham. In 1993, John hosted the World Town Crier Competition that drew more than 110 Town Criers and their spouses from around the world including Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada and the U.S.A.
